Gold scattered on the ground like glitter

Some people who decide to write a novel in a month do it because they have a specific idea in their head. A story has been simmering in their brain like ham and beans in a slow-cooker for years. They just need the time and self-permission to sit down and write the thing.

And then, they sit down to do exactly that, and realize a story is not a novel. Even if you have the spine and heart of your book, when you get into the process you may find that you need ideas for subplots, side quests, and other things that expand something from a short story to a full novel.

Other people love the idea of writing a novel. And unfortunately, have no real idea what novel to write. Well, regardless of which kind of writer you are, I have some amazing news: there is inspiration absolutely everywhere.

I live a quarter mile from a massive airplane graveyard. It’s eerie, and every time I pass it I think of all the stories you could build around an entire armada of decommissioned, not-quite-airworthy flying machines.

Did you know that most disco balls in the world are produced in one factory in Louisville, Kentucky? Why there of all places? Who is still buying enough of them to support a factory? Is it secretly a cover for something else entirely?

Did you know people still study (and aggressively practice) medieval sword fighting techniques? That there are clubs all over the world training experts in 14th century German long-sword combat? If that doesn’t make you think about stories involving dragons returning to modern Earth, then what story does it bring to mind for you?

Someone I know lives in a small-town suburb, and inexplicably an entire pro soccer team moved into the house next door.

If you are even a tiny bit curious, the world around you is positively spilling over with inspiration. All you have to do is start paying attention. Start looking at your neighborhood, town or city with the eyes of a storyteller.

Aside from helping you with your novel writing month, it will give you a fresh perspective for the rest of your life. The world is full of little wonders.

Now open your draft and start writing about them.
